Rainbows and Smiles work to add a little joy to the children and nurses at the childhood cancer wards in Johannesburg; yesterday, they got to share gifts to those fighting big battles.

Johannesburg, South Africa (29 January 2021) – Rainbows and Smiles is a non-profit organisation that focuses on helping children with cancer. They visit cancer wards and add smiles to the children fighting their biggest battles.

What many people don’t know about childhood cancers is that they take much longer to treat than adult cancers. Some of the children in cancer wards will spend a lot of their time there. These wards become their homes and norms.

Rainbows and Smiles work to remove a bit of the clinical edge of life in hospitals. They visit the children and spoil them with gifts. This is a great distraction from living in a cancer ward. Recently the organisation visited a cancer ward and spread some much-needed smiles.

“Today’s deliveries were super special; clothes, toiletries, snacks, LEGO, makeup, costume jewels and essential items that a princess would need. We witnessed a little 11-year-old with the biggest smile! Adoring appreciation as she rummaged through her dazzling new spoils.

Mr Bunny was then delivered to the 11-month-old baby girl. She loved the soft sounds and was so peaceful as it lulled her off to sleep.

Nurses loved their biscuits from the Dainfern community! Showing them our appreciation goes a long way when they are tirelessly working with these precious children!” – Rainbows and Smiles

As the ladies are handing over donations during a time of Covid-19, each item is washed, heat dried and set into its own quarantine before being given to the children. Rainbows and Smiles have worked hard to make sure each child they surprise gets a wonderful set of gifts, new clothing, toiletries and a few sweet treats. It has made the children beam; Covid-19 has changed how they are getting their treatment.

Isolation is key to making sure each child is safe. These gifts make up a little for not being able to see family. If you would like to support Rainbows and Smiles, you can reach out via Facebook here.
