In Somerset West, Western Cape, a church calls for donations to assist those impacted by the ruinous riots in KwaZulu-Natal.
Western Cape, South Africa (19 July 2021) – The Life Church in Somerset West joined hands with Timelink Cargo and will be providing and transporting food and toiletry hampers to those impacted by the devastating riots in KwaZulu-Natal.
The church is calling for donations from its members so it can fulfil this holy grail.<
This comes after raging unrest erupted earlier this month after former president Jacob Zuma was jailed over corruption charges. More than 200 people have so far died during the chaos in both KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
The streets of these two provinces are now mostly calm as volunteers started to clean up the debris. People have been posting photos of themselves distributing food to areas most affected by the unrest. Read a story we did about that here.
As South Africans celebrated Nelson Mandela Day on Sunday, President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged the nation to honour the legacy of the anti-apartheid hero by helping to rebuild the country.
“As we reaffirm our commitment to our democracy, let us use Mandela Day to provide food to the most vulnerable in our society, to clean up our streets and to start the task of rebuilding,” Ramaphosa said.
The Nelson Mandela International Day is commemorated in honour of former President Nelson Mandela, celebrated each year on July 18, Mandela’s birthday.
Ramaphosa has spent the better part of yesterday in Gauteng touring Soweto. He has been taking part in the clean-up after mayhem which saw thousands of people ransacking malls, schools etc…
On this #MandelaDay, we join all South Africans who have been engaged in cleanup and rebuilding activities in Gauteng and KZN following the devastation caused by the public violence and looting that took place. We say thank you for defending our democracy. #CleanUpSA #RebuildSA pic.twitter.com/nBzEyZLNlY
