The Douglasdale community has rallied to support a local animal welfare hero, Irene McKenzie Fraser, who was rushed to the hospital and needed a helping hand.

Douglasdale, South Africa (07 May 2021) – Irene McKenzie Fraser is an animal hero in her community. Sadly her health has taken a turn which means she needs some extra support. Friends and supporters are coming together to help care for her animals and cover some of her medical expenses.

Irene recently fell ill and was rushed to her nearest government hospital. She was found to have problems with her heart and lungs as well as a few other organs. This has meant she is currently in high care, where she is getting life-saving treatment.

While Irene is at a state hospital, she will still be responsible for some pretty steep medical bills. That is why Karen Pilling launched a crowdfund on BackaBuddy. Karen is hoping to ease some of the burdens for Irene and make sure she is able to cover the mounting medical bills.

“Irene runs a one-woman rescue centre in Douglasdale, Johannesburg and has dedicated her life to rescuing both domestic and wild animals. She has nursed countless injured, orphaned and traumatised animals back to health over the years, finding new homes for the rescued domestic and exotic wild animals, and successfully releasing native wild animals back into the wild.

Her love and care of the animals that pass through her hands are renowned. She is truly an inspiration to all who know her. But, Irene herself is now in need of help and care.

The funds raised will go towards covering Irene’s medical costs while she is in hospital, and her after-care costs while she is recovering. Money raised will also help towards feeding and caring for the numerous animals who are currently without their primary caregiver.

We call on all Irene’s family, friends and fellow animal lovers to support her in this time of need – and to give back to our beautiful buddy all the love and care she has given to others.

We wish Irene a speedy recovery, and hope that many will contribute to the much-needed funds.” – Karen Pilling

They are hoping to raise R300,000 for Irene, and already, the community have reached just over 10% of the goal. They are hoping Irene’s story will spread further than the community so more people can support her through her care.
