The Nelson Mandela Bay community have come together to assist a creche that burnt down over the holidays. They are helping to get up and running before the new school year.
The Sinethemba Pre-School in Motherwell NU-8 sadly burnt to the ground over the holidays after a group of boys allegedly set off fireworks nearby. A community member saw the blaze and alerted the authorities. By the time they had arrived the structure had burnt to the ground and everything was lost.
Candice-Leigh Haydam took to social media to ask people for assistance in rebuilding the creche before the new school year starts. The creche cares for over 70 children aged 1 to 5 and ensures they are safe during the day, have a wholesome meal and are taught skills for their age level.
“They are in need of anything and everything to try and help them rebuild/ refurnish.” [sic]
“Please if anyone has anything to donate please let me know as we are going to arrange a drop-off point.” – Candice-Leigh Haydam
The community heard her plea and came forward with various items that the creche could use. Candice-Leigh provided a list of items they needed and stressed that building materials were the top priority as the structure needs to go up soonest.
People have collected stationary, blankets, cooking equipment and more. If you would like to assist you can do so by contacting Nontutuzelo Mavis Slamse, who is the direct contact at the school on +27 (78) 7070990 or alternatively drop donations at one of two collection points (see list and addresses below).

While they await the rebuild, the teachers have started taking the children into their homes because parents have been returning to work. The community depends greatly on the school as it is the only one in the area. The assistance the community has offered so far has been phenomenal and the teachers are extremely grateful.
