Dainfern College in the North of Johannesburg has launched a few plastic collection programmes to help raise funds for two charities and the pupils are loving the challenge.
The pupils at Dainfern College are having a great time collecting different kinds of plastic for charity. The school has set up various collection points to help the Owl Rescue Centre and the Sweetheart Foundation.
Both charities make use of plastic to boost their fundraising abilities. For instance, the Owl Rescue Centre uses the plastic to make owl boxes which they use for rehabilitation and the Sweethearts Foundation makes use of bottle caps and bread tags to fund the purchase of wheelchairs for differently abled people in need.
The school encourages its pupils to bring their plastic from home and place it in the various collection boxes. Grozdana, the mother of Jesalyn Johnson, a 7-year-old we featured on Good Things Guy last year who collected plastic to get a wheelchair for a girl in need, shared the new projects with us.
She confirmed that the school was doing everything to combat plastic pollution and educate the children about recycling. The school wishes to give the pupils a chance to do good through recycling.
“We as Dainfern College, parents, pupils and staff all feel very strongly about what we can do to help the environment and with some extra exposure hope to highlight this critical issue. It goes even further towards drives like stopping the use of straws and plastic packets. In fact, Jesalyn is very adamant that we do not use straws and when we shop and the cashiers ask if we want a plastic bag, she very quickly answers, “No thank you!”’ – Grozdana Johnson
The school’s foundation runs multiple projects that work to uplift the local community as well. They have built community gardens, designed collection tins for change and hosted a swimathon to educate the older pupils about pollution in the ocean.
