When Thandokazi Dontsa witnessed her mother’s deteriorating vision, her heart ached, and her life was put on hold. Thankfully, with the support of Grace Vision, the elderly woman underwent a successful cataract surgery, giving them both a new lease on life.
Eastern Cape, South Africa (04 November 2024) – After noticing her mother struggling to pour water into a tub and making a mess on the floor, Thandokazi Dontsa knew that something was wrong.
This was back in 2022 when Thandokazi came to realise that her elderly mother’s vision had drastically deteriorated. Not only did this cause her pain as a daughter, but it drastically changed her life, too.
“Her blindness affected my life as well as my job and schooling. Because I was doing both at the time I had no choice but to stop and come home to look after her and to ensure that she was okay and taken care of,” she shares.
Thankfully, Thandokazi soon came to learn about Grace Vision an NPO that provides free high-quality primary eye care to the poorest regions of the Eastern Cape.
After assessments, Thandokazi’s mother received a Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery at Zithulele Hospital, restoring her sight and helping her daughter get her life back.
“I am so happy to have my life back. Now my mother can see and I never imagined she would be able to see me again. I had lost all hope.
“I’m now going to go and find a job again knowing she can take care of herself now. Thank you Grace Vision and everyone who made this surgery possible thus ensuring its success,” a grateful Thandokazi said.
