Sea Point walk raises R45,000 for Mdzananda Animal Clinic

Sea Point, South Africa (18 March 2024) — More than 300 dogs walked with their owners at a colourful parade along the Sea Point Promenade on Sunday to raise funds for the Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha.

The route went from the Mouille Point lighthouse to the Sea Point swimming pool and back.

There were dogs of all shapes and sizes, some dressed up in costumes.

This was the first time since the start of the Covid pandemic in 2020 that the event was held.

Mdzananda Animal Clinic spokesperson Marcelle du Plessis said 614 people and 335 dogs had taken part and the event had raised more than R45,000 for the clinic.

“We are completely overwhelmed by the amazing support we had – nearly double the amount of people and dogs arrived compared to our last event in 2020. We are truly so grateful to everyone who joined us,” Du Plessis told GroundUp. She said the next event will be held in 2025.

“The clinic is doing an amazing job in Khayelitsha,” said dog owner Renee de Sousa, who took part in the event. “The money raised will go a long way in making a difference to those animals.”

The clinic, which serves up to 1,500 animals a month, offers consultations, hospitalisation, surgery, sterilisation, and also runs a mobile clinic and a shelter.
