A dream come true for former domestic worker Nobuhle Makanza! She worked hard and never gave up on what she wanted, now she travels the world on a ship.
Nobuhle Makanza started working for Sandy Cotton as a domestic housekeeper in November 2011. The two immediately clicked and Sandy quickly learned that Nobuhle had ambition to be more and do more with her life than just clean. Sandy and Nobuhle discussed all the possible routes that could be taken to ensure a bright future.
In 2013 Sandy helped Nobuhle to enroll at Sorbet for a manicure and pedicure course. She completed her Diploma at the end of that year. The study bug bit! Nobuhle started working at a nail salon in Illovo to get practical experience. She spent 2014 and 2015 working at the salon and as a domestic housekeeper. Her spare hours were used to make extra money, she started a small clothing resale business and started saving.
“Doing manis and pedis for many northern suburbs women, to save up enough to go abroad to work on cruise liners…..her dream job! During that period, she also enrolled at ITEC and got a Diploma in Business Administration and First Aid.”
“Her determination was incredible. Focused and inspired, Nobuhle never once considered giving up or slacking off, keeping her dream job in mind over the years. Sandy describes her drive as “astonishing”.”
She researched what qualifications she would need to work on a cruise ship and spent the next 2 years working and studying to reach her goal. Nobuhle’s dream came true when she was called to join the MSC Silver Wind earlier this year.
“Sandy funded each and every course, believing that Nobuhle’s ability and great attitude was going to take her far….and sure enough, it did!”
Nobuhle is proof that no matter what, never give up on your dreams!
