While many South Africans enjoyed a well-deserved break this past Workers’ Day, a group of inspiring young people in the Eastern Cape chose service over rest, dedicating six hours of the public holiday to brighten up the lives of others!
Eastern Cape, South Africa (02 May 2025) – Workers’ Day was no regular public holiday for a group of youth from the Masinyusane Development Organisation’s Year Beyond programme, as they rolled up their sleeves to give back to their community.
Dubbed the “Yeboneers”, the youth members volunteered six hours of their day yesterday to bring love, joy, and dignity to the elderly at Ekuphumleni Old Age Home and the children at Erica House Place of Safety.
“This Workers’ Day, we were reminded that some of the most important work is done not for a paycheck, but from the heart.
“It was more than just a visit. It was about connection. It was Ubuntu in action. It was youth showing up for their communities in the most beautiful way,” shared Masinyusane.
From painting, gardening, cleaning, washing, preparing food, and even pampering the residents, the Yeboneers went out of their way to make the young and old feel seen and appreciated.
The soul-stirring beauty of service is demonstrated by how a small act of selflessness can create immense joy and provide support to those in need. These youngsters didn’t just remind us of the spirit of ubuntu but they exemplified it, and we commend their efforts.
“To our Yeboneers: Thank you for reminding us what true service looks like,” Masinyusane added.
