For Brett Shuttleworth and Joe van Niekerk, success came early and in abundance… but the real story began when they started questioning what it was all for.
South Africa (14 April 2026) – At the height of their careers, Brett Shuttleworth and Joe van Niekerk had already achieved what most people spend a lifetime chasing. But what came next wasn’t more success… it was something far more meaningful.
For two men who had spent years performing at the highest level, the “meaningful change” didn’t happen in stadiums, on red carpets or in front of crowds. It took time, it took reflection… but it did happen. Today, that change has become something powerful. Together, Brett and Joe are creating spaces that are helping people reconnect to themselves, rediscover clarity and ultimately change the way they show up in their lives. They are calling it the “Ultimate Breakthrough Experience”. And it is creating a ripple effect that is reaching far beyond the individuals in the room.

Brett’s journey took him from professional rugby into the world of modelling and Hollywood, where he experienced a lifestyle many people dream about. But behind the excitement, there was a growing awareness that something was “missing”.
“For me, it was the realisation that I had achieved a great deal of what I thought would make me happy… and still something was missing,” Brett shares.
“I was chasing my ego around the world and it created a lot of trouble in my life. My time in Hollywood exposed me to that lifestyle, as the saying goes, ‘sex, drugs and rock ’n roll’, and while it may sound exciting, it played a profound role in showing me that none of it could truly fulfil me. Not even the highs of Hollywood fame could satisfy that deeper yearning.”
That realisation led him inward, starting a journey of self-enquiry and a search for something more grounded… something that wasn’t dependent on external validation.
Joe’s story unfolded in a different way.
“From the outside, it looked like he had it all,” Brett explains. “He went straight into the Springbok team at 21, was named South African Player of the Year, and had everything that comes with success. But it was all on the outside.”

Then life shifted. Injuries, personal loss and difficult moments forced a pause that couldn’t be ignored.
“At 27, something broke. He missed the 2007 World Cup through injury, lost his contract, his relationship ended and he found himself drinking heavily. For the first time, there was nowhere else to look but within.”
Joe rebuilt, returned to the top of his game and helped shape a championship-winning team at Toulon. But it was what happened towards the end of his career that truly changed everything.
“He was dropped from the team for the final six months of his career. Instead of resisting it, he chose to show up differently. More present. More open. Supporting the team without needing a role or identity to hold onto. That shift changed something in him.”
When his career ended, Joe stepped away from the noise and into solitude… to reconnect with what had always been there.
“And what he found was greater than anything he had achieved externally, a sense of freedom, joy and peace that didn’t come from the outside.”
Different journeys, same truth.
“We both came to the same understanding in our own way that everything we were searching for was already within us… that feeling of total fulfilment and satisfaction existed in us, as us, already. And so it’s true for every other human being on this planet regardless of their status or circumstances. And that’s ultimately where we teach from today. Our purpose is to bring people to this realisation.”
That purpose now lives in the work they facilitate together. Through immersive retreats, workshops and experiences, they guide people through a process of reconnecting with themselves… moving from pressure and disconnection back to clarity and alignment.

And the impact is real.
“There are so many stories,” Brett says, reflecting on the more than 200,000 people who have experienced this work over the years. But one recent experience stands out.
“Earlier this year, Joe and I had the privilege of facilitating a staff retreat for African Monarch Journeys, in a remote part of Namibia.”
What unfolded there went beyond expectation.
“What I witnessed was profound. As we moved through the process, you could see something shifting them out of their roles into their souls. It wasn’t an intellect getting, but a true embodiment of them coming home to their true nature.”
“People started laughing, dancing… there was a lightness, a sense of joyous celebration of coming home to themselves. You could feel it. They were experiencing their true nature, maybe for the first time.”
“The experience resonated so deeply that it’s now being extended into the surrounding community, with a programme being developed for the leaders of the Mayuni and Mashi Conservancies, supported by Chief Mayuni himself. That, to me, is the real impact… when the work doesn’t end with the retreat, but begins to ripple outward.”
That ripple effect sits at the heart of everything they’re building.
It’s also why their work has expanded into men’s retreats, creating spaces where vulnerability is not something to hide but something that opens the door to growth.
“Joe and I both spent two decades in environments where men are taught to perform, to be strong, to push through,” Brett explains. “We were raised with the idea that ‘cowboys don’t cry’, that vulnerability is something to hide, not something to embrace.”
But when the space is right, something shifts quickly.
“The moment you create a safe space, something shifts very quickly. The armour drops. The stories start to fall away. And underneath that, there’s just a human being who, in many cases, has been carrying a lot for a very long time.”
Sometimes, the breakthroughs are incredibly simple… and deeply moving.
“On a recent men’s retreat, one brother shared that he hadn’t laughed in 18 years. During the retreat, he experienced his first real, deep belly laugh and you could feel what that meant for him and for all of us. It wasn’t just laughter, it was something opening.”
Through a mix of breathwork, movement, connection and shared experiences, the work is designed to be both meaningful and accessible… showing that transformation doesn’t have to feel heavy to be powerful.
And for anyone reading this who might feel stuck, overwhelmed or disconnected, Brett brings it back to something simple.
“The first thing I would say is… just pause. There’s nothing wrong with where you are. There is no error in the game. Whatever you’re experiencing right now is part of your human curriculum; it’s guiding you back to yourself.”
It doesn’t require drastic change. Just a moment of awareness.
“Go into healthy solitude, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Sit in meditation, or go for a walk in nature, and allow yourself to just be. Let whatever is coming, come… and whatever is going, go.”
“You don’t need to change your whole life in one day. Just create a moment of awareness. Because ultimately, everything you’re looking for, the peace, the clarity, the sense of being okay, is already within you.”
And maybe that’s what makes this story so powerful. It’s not about stepping away from success… it’s about redefining it.
