Grandpa's Dream- Tim Attwell

A Good Thing happened on the N2 between Cape Town and Somerset West. A Grandpa’s 61 year old dream came true after years of waiting.

Emma Attwell’s father has been holding on to a dream his entire life. At the age of 6 he decided he wanted to drive a tar-putter (asphalt paver).

At 67 that dream finally came true!

His daughter Emma reached out to Power Construction on a whim, never in her wildest dreams did she think they would actually respond.

“I really did not expect a response. Who would? But, they did respond, and they have been extraordinary in making this happen.”

Emma emailed Power Construction and let them know how impressed she was with the progress of the road works on the N2 between Cape Town and Somerset West and that every time she drove past she thought about her dad and his dream.

She asked if it would be possible for her father to drive an asphalt paver.

“My dad has spent his entire working life giving to others for very little in return. Watching him grow old, with so many of his dreams slowly rescinding into the darkness of things that will never happen, is hard.”

“My dad is an extraordinary person, but he has quietly gone about his business trying to make the world a better and kinder place with no expectation of aggrandizement or reward. He is also an awesome Grampa and Dad who stays the course no matter what horrors it throws at him (and we have indeed thrown horrors at him). Him and my mom support me and my two daughters, as I have a chronic disease (Addison’s) and haven’t been able to work for over a year now.”

“As he grows older and I grow older and my daughters grow older, I long to offer him something to express my love and gratitude for all he has given and continues to give. I long to give him his moment, and it is happening. I hope it lives up to the same dream he formed 61 years go.” – Emma Attwell

Power Construction responded and told Emma they would love to help make her fathers dream come true. So on the 14th of February Emma’s 67 year old father got to have one of his longest dreams come true. We asked Emma how the day went and she told us,

“There is so much to say! Not only was it an amazing experience for my Dad and for us to see, we got a much deeper appreciation of the skill, planning and team work that is involved. Perspective and respect!”
