If you have clothes that just don’t fit like they used to or solely serve the purpose of taking up space in your closet, this is your sign to give them the chance to be loved by someone else! Here’s where you can put your preloved clothes to better use in Cape Town’s CBD:

Cape Town, South Africa (03 August, 2023)—Cape Town is easily one of the trendiest cities in South Africa, where many streets double as unofficial runways; bustling with creatives, influencers and people who spend a lot of cash at thrift markets. But, turn the street corner and you’ll see a completely different reality for many Capetonians—one where clothes with holes attempt to keep wearers warm, and shoes are worn down to their soles. In Cape Town’s CBD, both are a reality existing at the same time. So, how can we balance the scales a little better?

Putting our preloved clothes to better use is one of the easiest, free ways to keep the cold off someone else’s back as winter beats on. That’s not to say donating clothes is reserved for cold weather; items that have your closet challenging museum displays for their lack of touch are always welcome for those in need.

Finding a place where you can drop off goods seamlessly shouldn’t be a treasure hunt. And in Cape Town’s CBD, donation bins (part of the Cape Town Central City Improvement District, CCID) are scattered all over the show, making them easily accessible.

Here’s Where to find the CCID Donation Bins in Cape Town’s CBD

  • Gardens Commercial High School
  • Central Library (Parade Street)
  • Neighbourgood East City
  • The Onyx (Foreshore)
  • The Square (Buitenkant Street)
  • MGI Bass Gordon (Bree Street)
  • 2 Long Street
  • Rainbow Academy (Adderley Street)
  • Clarke’s Bar & Dining Room (Bree Street)

You can also drop off bedding and other items that will be helpful (but check in with aziza@capetownccid.org first for those other items).

Where do the Preloved Clothes Go?

The clothes head off to CCID’s partner NGOs, including a rehabilitation project helped by Khulisa Social Solutions, The Hope Exchange, Ons Plek, Straatwerk and the Homestead.

What Else Can I Do to Help if I’m Not in Cape Town’s CBD?

Check out this charity list focused on helping people across South Africa and get in touch with any to see if they could use a donation (the answer will almost always be yes).

If you don’t have preloved clothes but still want to help make winter kinder, we’ve got some suggestions here.
