Once lost and uncertain, Nomathamsanqa found a lifeline in the Amy Foundation’s Beauty and Wellness programme. Here, the former housekeeper was empowered to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a beauty therapist.

Cape Town, South Africa (31 January 2025) – Initially, heartbroken, confused, and frustrated Nomathamsanqa Mlomo found herself wandering aimlessly through life, uncertain about whether any door would ever open for her.

However, after much searching and being unsure if any opportunities would ever come her way, Nomathamsanqa has transformed into a new person. She now radiates confidence, having realised her dreams of becoming a beauty therapist after joining the Amy Foundation’s Beauty and Wellness programmes.

Having joined in February last year, Nomathamsanqa has been empowered to not only start her own business but also take better care of herself.

“Before joining Amy Foundation I was working as a housekeeper for three days a week,” she shares.

In addition to gaining new beauty skills, Nomathamsanqa has also been able to learn invaluable lessons in courage, self-care and the importance of setting boundaries.

“Becoming a beauty therapist has always been my dream and joining the Amy Foundation felt like an answered prayer,” shares Nomathamsanqa who now affirms that with God nothing is impossible.

Today, she is gaining hands-on experience in all things beauty by assisting a former Amy student in her salon. She has also recently secured a six-month contract for an administrative role with the City of Cape Town.

With her feet firmly on the ground and her eyes set on greater sights, Nomathamsanqa shares her big dreams:

“I want to open my own beauty salon, as well as a mobile beauty service. I aspire to create jobs by starting a school for beauty and massage.”

She encourages others who may be facing struggles with poverty or confusion about how to navigate life to understand it’s all a battle within the mind.

“Think positively, and you will start to see positive results. The Amy Foundation truly changes lives. It changed mine and I believe it can change yours too,” Nomathamsanqa shares.
