Learners at Howick High School recently put their woodworking skills to the best use by creating kennels for animals in an underprivileged area!
Mpophomeni, South Africa (21 November 2024) — Learners at Howick High School recently put their woodworking skills to the test and passed with flying colours!
An initiative led by the high school’s Community Club, the idea was to marry practical skills to purpose. As such, the club learners were hard at work building fine kennels that were donated to Funda Nenja; an NGO based in the Midlands’ Mphophomeni township.
Funda Nenja is a dog training initiative making a serious different in the realm of animal welfare. Their lessons help children and older community members learn essential skills for efficient pet care; furthering animal education and fostering a deeper connection to animals in their area. Additionally, they help animals with other important measures of care, like vaccinations.
After lots of time woodworking away, the Howick High learners were able to gift Funda Nenja three kennels, one of which has already been donated.
It was a welcomed offering for the Funda Nenja team, which shared that this kind of support helps them improve the lives of Mpophomeni dogs.
Heartwarmingly, some of the learners are said to have not only gifted their time, but additional materials out of pocket to ensure that the kennels would be top quality.
These kennels will now provide dog-owners in the area a safe and comfortable shelter for their animals.
