iKhaya da Luz Children’s Home has cared for over 100 kids and teenagers over the past decade; founder Ana Pinto le Roux has been a beacon of hope for the desperate for triple that time. In recent times, her home has had to turn those in need away, unless hope can be restored:

Benoni, South Africa (11 March 2024) — When you’ve been taking care of others for as long as Ana Pinto le Roux has, you know how much hope matters. As the founder of iKhaya da Luz Children’s Home, people like Ana are embodiments of hope for so many. But, they also need its light just as much as the people they serve do.

iKhaya da Luz Children’s Home has taken care of over one hundred children over its decade of providing love, care, shelter and guidance. In this way, its doors have been a route to hope. As for Ana herself, she has been taking children under her wing for 30 years.

But in recent times, her Benoni home has had to start turning people away—a heart-breaking sentiment for anyone who has found their purpose in protecting the most vulnerable.

While iKhaya da Luz Children’s Home is reportedly not closing its doors down as yet, it has still had to close its doors to new cases who need them in order to care for those who are already under its roof.

“I have reached a stage where personal resources are depleted and without financial assistance to cover basic expenses such as electricity, water, Bus fuel & insurance, medical, educational…etc, I will not be able to continue raising these destitute Children on my own,” says Ana with a heavy heart.

iKhaya da Luz does not receive government funding as a Non-Profit, which means it is completely reliant on community support.

At this stage, Ana is urgently looking for sponsors to hire a caregiver—something she describes as “the first step to opening our doors to the children who come knocking and continue to be HOME to the one’s who live here.”

Earlier this year, we saw StreetSmart South Africa announce its closure. Other charities are fighting desperately to keep themselves going. Times are tough for so many in our country, but they are often hardest on those whose commitment is to a community.

We’ve seen people run, arm-walk, swim and get creative for the most incredible causes. And maybe, the next visitor who comes knocking on iKhaya da Luz’s door will be exactly what it most needs—hope.
