abandoned babies

Some people feel a quarter-life crisis coming on when they turn 32. Nisha Varghese from the Eastern Cape had a different mindset. She was going to raise thousands for abandoned babies, and exceeded expectations!

East London, South Africa (3 April, 2023) — Nisha Varghese decided that her 32nd birthday wasn’t just going to be about her. In an incredible initiative, she decided to use the celebration to do something good for lives a lot younger, dedicating her ‘birthday gift’ to abandoned babies.

The goal was R32 000 (aptly tied to the celebratory age). It would go to the Restore Trust’s Breath of Life House in East London where vulnerable babies in-need are looked after. Nisha’s been a volunteer there since 2018.

Of her time with the babies, Nisha says:

“I cherish every moment spent with these little ones, knowing that I’m making a difference in their lives.”

Nisha started a BackaBuddy campaign, and soon people from all over the world were touched by her birthday gift.

On 25 March, Nisha celebrated another trip around the sun, and an exceeded donation expectation. On her birthday, the amount raised was R33 767 for Breath of Life!

But, Nisha also managed to rally the effort in a way that didn’t spotlight her cerebral palsy and make the story about herself in a way she shares, she didn’t want. It was about showing the other side of neurodivergence, the one that is capable and heroic, the helper and not simply the helpless as many incorrectly assume.

“I’m glad I won my way!!” — Nisha.

The Breath of Life is a non-profit run by Restore Trust that provides a safe haven for abandoned babies in Buffalo City, East London. However, you don’t need to wait for Nisha’s next birthday to help out!

Their website shares the products they need, and even if you can’t donate anything, pre-loved toys and clothing are always welcome.
