While many were hiding from the heat over the holidays, Joel Smith took on the scorching weather via wheels as part of an epic 920km charity cycle! Joel’s charity cycle is now done and dusted, leaving behind marks of inspiration along the East Coast.

Eastern Cape, South Africa (10 January 2025) — Late last December, Joel Smith committed to something few would over the holiday break: a cycle boasting over 900kms under the scorching sun. Not just a means to explore the East Coast, every kilometre traversed aimed to uplift The Kings Children’s Home based in the Eastern Cape—the heart of Joel’s charity cycle.

The weather was unbearable at times, at just under 40°C, as were the headwinds and the tendinitis Joel had to deal with in his left knee. But even more unbearable for the cyclist was the thought of the Kings Children’s Home not receiving support.

A non-profit caring for children and babies who have been abandoned or abused, Joel’s effort touched many hearts across the Eastern Cape.

As Caron de Coriolis, who was tasked with updates on Joel’s charity cycle, shared after the 921 km mark, Joel was a massive force of inspiration whose commitment made for an incredible start to the new year.

“When I was first asked to share updates about Joel Smith’s epic cycle for The Kings Childrens Home I’ll be honest—I wasn’t too excited. It felt like just another task, an intrusion during my holiday when I wanted to switch off and focus on family.

“But then the updates started coming in. Joel’s determination, his team’s unwavering support, and the sheer grit it took to push through 921kms in insane heat completely changed my perspective. I went from feeling like this was “just another task” to being deeply motivated and moved by what this young man has done. (And HUGE respect to Fran Smith, Martin and rest of his incredible team!)”.

Joel has since been deemed a hero in the Eastern Cape and has completed his charity cycle to the applause of many.

The Kings Children’s Home couldn’t be more grateful for his efforts; backing him all the way to the very end.

Those who wish to make a contribution to the charity in honour of Joel’s trek can do so here!
