Savannah Voigt and Zack Waters are tackling Robben Island’s massive Atlantic Ocean crossing to raise funds for their fellow lifeguards.
Camps Bay, South Africa (16 August 2021) – Savannah Voigt and Zack Waters are 16-year-old lifeguards at the Clifton branch in Cape Town who are doing the Robben Island Crossing to raise funds for the Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club.
They hope to raise funds for the Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club (CSLC) family. Many of the senior and professional lifeguards lost their “out of season” jobs and have not been unable to work since May last year, due to Covid restrictions. The funds raised will go towards the CSLC Bursary Fund. The fund is being used to help support some of the lifeguards participating at SA Lifesaving Championships for Stillwater pool events at Newton Park Pool and for Surf events at Kings Beach, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) from 2-9 October 2021.
They are raising a total of R100,000. So far, Savannah and Zack have managed to raise R37,534.13.
“This is a MASSIVE mental challenge for both swimmers, in Winter, as there are so many influencing elements at play on the day. The distance is approximately 7,5km and currents, tides, ambient, and water temperatures, will all be in play on the actual swim day. Let’s not even factor in the possibility of seeing some actual live sea creatures!” – Nikki Voigt
They will be swimming this coming weekend; they have a window between the 20th and 22nd of August. The water temperatures will range between 10 and 16 degrees Celcius.
“The successful crossing would depend on ideal conditions on the day and therefore for safety reasons, the best day will be selected closer to the swim date. The crossing will be coordinated and assisted by Big Bay Event’s, Derrick Fraser.”
