Marla Sukraj, a warm soul currently recovering from a heart bypass surgery, has dedicated the past three years to bringing joy and comfort to the littlest warriors battling illness at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital through handmade cuddly companions.
Johannesburg, South Africa (05 November 2024) – Helping to bring a little comfort and gentle reminders of the magic of childhood to little warriors at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, is the compassionate Marla Sukraj.
For three years, Marla, along with the dedicated women of New Beginnings, has been knitting and sewing teddy bears, transforming simple fabric into symbols of love and hope.
These cuddly companions are then gifted to children battling cancer and other life-threatening illnesses at the hospital’s paediatric ward.
The ladies of New Beginnings attend arts and crafts classes at the Kibler Park Recreation Centre, headed up by Marla, also on the centre’s committee.
They began knitting and stuffing teddy bears for charity when Marla decided to design a new teddy for the group to make and give to kids at the hospital.
Marla’s dedication knows no bounds. While the mother to many hopes to expand this heartwarming initiative to reach more children in need, she is currently in recovery after having to undergo a major quadruple heart bypass surgery after experiencing her third heart attack this year.
Sharing about her mother’s big heart for others, Sejal Durga said:
“Bringing joy to those less fortunate means everything to her; it gives her a profound sense of fulfilment to be able to give back.
“She’s driven by a strong desire to make a difference and reach as many people as possible in the community.
Sejal shared that while her mother is still recovering from the intense procedure, Marla’s passion for others keeps her going, and she is eager to continue her good work of touching the lives of children.
