Gogo party

Njabulo Ntombela attended his graduation at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and took his Gogo on stage to honour her for her lifetime of support and encouragement.

It has been an amazing week for inspiring graduation stories. We have seen people overcome hardships to graduate with flying colours and reach their dreams. We have seen people own the graduation stage as if it were a runway and we have seen people embrace their culture and heritage by dressing in their traditional wear.

Now we are sitting in puddles of tears with this next one. Our hearts were so deeply touched by the act of love and honour that Njabulo Ntombela gave to his great-gogo. We just couldn’t contain ourselves.

Njabulo graduated with a law degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He used his moment to honour his great-grandmother for her contribution to his success. Dressed in his traditional wear, he went and draped his graduation gown over her shoulders and took her along while he received his degree.

The University of KZN shared the moving story, along with images of the moment on their Facebook page.

“The School of Law Graduation was agog this morning when Bachelor of Laws graduate, Njabulo Ntombela sporting ibheshu (Zulu traditional dress) took off his graduation gown and draped it on his great-grandmother, Ms Nomkikilizo Ntombela (89). The gesture symbolised his acknowledgement of her contribution to his success. In a way, it was an acknowledgement of the enormous contribution made by oGogo and oKhokho who raise their grandchildren. His success was her success. They both hail from Nkandla. Siyabonga Khokho.”

Njabulo is a role model, we should all honour our parents and grandparents when we become successful in life, because without them, where would we be?
