A compassionate sterilisation drive in Lavender Hill is improving the lives of hundreds of pets and their owners, thanks to Aid4Aid, SPCA, and Paws-A-While, proof that real change starts with care.

Lavender Hill, South Africa (22 July 2025) – Even the winter rains can’t dampen the spirit of compassion sweeping through Lavender Hill.

Thanks to a powerful collaboration between Aid 4 Animals in Distress (Aid4Aid), the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, and Paws-A-While, a dedicated animal sterilisation campaign is not just continuing, it’s thriving. Over 70 cats and dogs have been sterilised in the latest phase of the campaign, with more than 300 animals treated in the area over the last six months.

It’s a lifeline for both pets and their people.

Each animal is collected by the SPCA mobile unit and Aid4Aid’s trusted field workers, taken to the SPCA hospital, and safely returned the next day, sterilised, vaccinated, dewormed, and deflead. And it doesn’t stop there: every home also receives food for their pets, generously provided by Lionel’s Choice.

“This year has been like a dream come true for me,” says JJ Jones, lead field worker for Aid4Aid. “I’ve been rescuing and supporting animals for nine years now, but this year, we’ve finally been able to stop many unwanted litters. In so doing, we are saving many lives.”

The campaign is underpinned by community trust and education. The Aid4Aid field-worker team, fully branded and out daily in the streets, engages directly with pet owners, explaining the long-term benefits of sterilisation, which is also required by City of Cape Town bylaws for animals over six months old.

“We are just as proud of our field-worker team led by JJ Jones,” says Grant O’Neill, Chairperson of Aid4Aid. “Without them, we would not have been able to sign up and sterilise all these animals.”

The work is deeply local, deeply impactful, and deeply supported. The current winter campaign was made possible through funding donated by Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis to the Cape Animal Welfare Forum (CAWF), of which this campaign is a beneficiary.

“We’re incredibly grateful to Aid4Aid and Paws-A-While for recognising that preventing suffering is far kinder—and far more effective—than trying to undo it,” says Belinda Abraham, spokesperson for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA. “By reducing the number of unwanted litters, they’re easing the burden on animals, communities, and welfare organisations alike.”

For the founder of Paws-A-While, Carolyn Dudgeon, this is more than a welfare initiative.

“Lavender Hill has long lacked a structured initiative to manage the growing pet population. This project not only uplifts the lives of animals but also empowers members of the community. It’s about creating long-term change through compassion and collaboration.”

And that’s exactly what’s unfolding, one home visit, one sterilisation, one act of kindness at a time.
