This week, 15-year-old Mahlatse Marema underwent major surgery to remove a large tumour that had developed on the left side of his face – a crucial procedure all made possible by collective compassion that refused to allow a young man to endure continued suffering.
Krugersdorp, South Africa (06 November 2025) – This week, Mahlatse Marema, a teen diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis, took a huge, brave step towards healing and claiming his confidence.
On Monday, 3 November 2025, Mahlatse and his family were transported to Netcare Sunninghill Hospital by the Mogale City Business Committee NPC (MCBC) together with its partners from the Asset Maintenance Department.

There, Mahlatse underwent a major surgery on the left side of his face, where he had developed a large tumour, which doctors confirmed required urgent attention.
“We are pleased to confirm that the procedure was successful. He was discharged the following day and will return for a follow-up consultation on 6 November. The second phase of his surgery is scheduled for January 2026,” confirmed MCBC Chairman, Gideon Phiri.
Phiri also shared that Mahlatse’s family is in good spirits and extremely grateful for the support received.
The NPC has also been assisting in the family’s immediate needs, such as food, transportation, and accommodation, during Mahlatse’s treatment period, as the teen’s mother, Magdeline Marema, is currently unemployed and is appealing for work opportunities.
Representatives from the organisations involved in making Mahlatse’s surgery possible, Collen Tshegang and Mr Masindi, accompanied the family again the day after the surgery and will continue to support them for follow-up visits.
Mahlatse’s story is touching and beautifully captures bravery, community, and the power of people coming together to support one another.
