Retraction and Clarification: “Man Without Phone Who Carried Distressed Seal in Search of Help”
Cape Town, South Africa (08 September 2023) — Last week Sunday, a man wandered the streets of Camps Bay cradling a seal. Bystander Sonja Woolff came across the pair and discovered that the man, referred to as Charles, had found the distressed seal at Glen Beach.
Cape Town, South Africa (12 September 2023) – In our pursuit of sharing uplifting and heartwarming stories with our readers, we occasionally encounter situations that require us to revisit our reporting. Today, we issue a retraction and clarification for our article published on September 8, 2023, titled “Man Without Phone Carries Distressed Seal in Search of Help.”
The original article highlighted the actions of a man named Charles, also known as Wousie, who was reported to have rescued a distressed seal named Sammy. We interviewed Sonja Woolff, who had encountered Charles and Sammy on that fateful day and shared her account of the incident.
Our original article conveyed the story as an act of kindness and compassion, with Charles portrayed as a hero who had stepped in to help a defenceless animal in need. However, we must now address new information that has come to our attention in a statement released by the Hout Bay Seal Rescue Centre (HBSRC) on September 11, 2023.
The HBSRC’s statement raises important concerns about the circumstances surrounding Sammy’s rescue and the actions of Wousie.
According to their account, Sammy’s behaviour exhibited signs of possible abuse or tampering, casting doubt on the initial narrative of a seal in distress. Additionally, HBSRC reported an unsettling encounter with Wousie, who allegedly opposed Sammy’s rescue, referring to the seal as “his baby.” Tragically, Sammy’s condition deteriorated to the point where euthanasia became necessary due to dehydration and organ failure. This heartbreaking development underscores the critical importance of entrusting the care of wild animals to trained professionals who possess the expertise and resources to ensure their well-being.
In light of these revelations, we offer our sincere apologies for any confusion or misunderstanding that our original article may have caused. Good Things Guy is dedicated to responsible and accurate reporting, and we deeply regret any implication that the handling of wild animals is ever advisable.
We are actively seeking to gather more information on this incident and are committed to providing our readers with a follow-up report. This will include any statements or insights from Wousie, as we endeavour to obtain his perspective on the matter as well.
In the meantime, we align ourselves with HBSRC’s message that seals are protected species and should never be handled by individuals without the necessary permits and expertise. When encountering distressed wildlife or seals, we strongly urge you to contact your local wildlife rescue or conservation organization, such as Hout Bay Seal Rescue Centre, for immediate assistance and guidance.
We appreciate our readers’ understanding and support, and we remain committed to sharing stories that promote the welfare of animals and the environment while ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our reporting.
Sincerely,
Brent Lindeque
