Sarah-Faye O’Mullane took to social media to share her joy that her son finally got some much-needed blood after they put out calls for donors to come forward.

Durban, South Africa (20 December 2021) – Sarah-Faye O’Mullane’s son Harry has been waiting for blood. Harry is a rare blood type, specifically O-Negative. He needed a blood transfusion, but sadly there wasn’t any blood available for him.

Harry is currently battling Leukaemia. He is 4-years-old and was diagnosed in September 2021 with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia after being rushed to hospital with pain in his leg.

On the 17th of December, Sarah-Faye took to her social media to ask for people to please donate. She explained how if more people helped boost the general supply in South Africa, that the blood Harry needed would become available.

“We are sitting in a situation where Harry really needs a blood transfusion for O Negative which is rare, but there is non..We’ve tried all avenues but the response and only solution it to top up the countries supplies. His blood type can go to anyone but he can only receive that type. If we top up all types there is less pressure and more available so that the O neg is not used up by non-O neg blood type recipients. We can do this!”

The blood process takes a day or so at the lab, so Sarah-Faye continued to urge people to continue to donate until the blood for Harry became available.

On the 18th of December, Harry got the blood he needed. Sarah-Faye’s call for help was heard far and wide, and it just goes to show how something as simple as a blood donation can save a life.

“Where to begin. First, it’s going to be with a Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. What we saw from yesterday to today has been unbelievable. People from all over the country rallied for Harry and the blood he desperately needed.

From there not being a drop, there has been an influx. When the nurse came in here today to say that they had received the call to say that blood was coming in and being processed I got emotional. Not just because of the fact that Harry would be ok, but because of the enormous gratitude I have and can’t adequately express. There is no substitute for blood. With his leukaemia, Harry needs regular transfusions. When there is not blood there is literally nothing that can be done besides ask for your help. Without that blood, they cannot go on for very long. So whoever you are, please know that today you saved our sons life and for that I hope that one day your kindness is returned.

I am sitting here next to Harry who has blood flowing into his veins and who has gone from looking pale to having his rosy cheeks back.”

Harry will need regular transfusions as he goes through his treatment.

You can support the family by donating blood, registering to become a bone marrow donor, or donating towards their crowdfund, which will cover Harry’s medical expenses here.
