To have a warm, safe home. This was the deep-seated hope and dream for a single mother of 4, Cynthia Mkhonta, who had navigated unimaginable hardship, including losing her sight, before life-changing kindness finally intervened.
Louville, South Africa (05 May 2025) – In the heart of Louville in the Ehlanzeni District Municipality of Mpumalanga, one single mother’s life has been changed for the better.
Having endured many hard and often cold and unsafe days in a single-room mudhouse with no windows, electricity or running water with her four children, Cynthia Mkhonta’s eyes welled up with tears of joy last week when she received a newly built home courtesy of the Collen Mashawana Foundation and Metro FM.
Following the loss of her sight in 2022 due to a prolonged illness, navigating through basic daily tasks proved challenging for Cynthia, who has had to depend on her four children, elder sister, and neighbours for support.
Cynthia disclosed how the family used a torch as a source of light in the house and shared the small space together, getting by, making the most of a far from ideal living situation.
Receiving the new house hasn’t only given Cynthia a safe and dignified place to call home, but also proven that her prayers over the years were heard and have finally come to be answered.
The mother of four expressed her heartfelt gratitude to her community for supporting her and her family through the darkest times.
She also thanked the sponsors and organisations who have, by being touched by her story, made it possible for her to once again experience the simple joys of having her own bed, in her own room and a warm home to raise her children.
