Some causes are worth leaving your comfort zone for. Running isn’t Moyo Ndukwana’s thing, but the SPCA CEO is lacing up for a 10km marathon to fund 100 sterilisations and realise the dream of an unwanted litter-free city.

Cape Town, South Africa (21 August 2025) – You know something is important to someone when they’re willing to not just step out of their comfort zone, but push themselves to the very limit to stand for it.

Moyo Ndukwana doesn’t run marathons. He doesn’t even consider himself much of a runner. But on 18 October, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA CEO will line up for the 10km Sanlam Cape Town Marathon Peace Run for the well-being of animals.

Together with thirteen SPCA colleagues, Ndukwana will run to raise R60,000 to fund 100 sterilisations and prevent unwanted litters of puppies and kittens.

“I am not a runner,” says Ndukwana.

“But I am chasing a dream.  I dream of a city where the only dogs in the street are walking beside their people, and the only cats outside are chasing butterflies in their own gardens. That dream begins with sterilisation, because when we prevent unwanted litters, we prevent suffering on a scale you cannot imagine.”

At a time when there are already too many animals and not enough loving homes, 100 sterilisations means fewer stray and unwanted animals and more opportunities for homes.

The proof is in the numbers. According to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, unwanted and stray animal admissions decreased by 12% as a result of 13% more sterilisation procedures performed in the previous year.

Their humane pet population control efforts also earned Cape Town international recognition at the United Nations World Urban Forum.

Funds raised from the marathon will go towards skilled veterinary professionals, theatre, anaesthetic and surgical equipment, transportation, post-operative care, as well as outreach that brings services to communities.

Ndukwana may “not be a runner”, but he’s doing it anyway for the future of our furry friends. For that, he’s already a champion for good in our eyes!
