Left paraplegic after a hit and run when she was a child, Nellie’s taken this unexpected course of her life on like a champion. Now, her colleague is showing her how much she positively impacts all those around her by organising her new wheelchair.

Durban, South Africa (25 November 2024) — Durban’s Nellie knows what it means to choose joy in the face of adversity—she does it every day.

Left paraplegic at just 8 years old following a tragic hit and run in which she was knocked over; this tragedy could’ve easily defined the person she’d become once she grew up.

But Nellie had other plans. Plans that included rising above all that has been thrown her way and showing others that just because your life changes course, does not mean it needs to change who you are.

Those who know Nellie know her as a beacon of joy and positivity.

“I have worked with Nellie for over 5 years and she is one of the most inspirational young ladies I have ever met,” shares Nellie’s colleague Kelly.

“In all the years I have known her, she has not allowed life’s tough blows (and there have been many) to get her down. She is independent, positive and kind.”

Nellie had another blow recently after her electric wheelchair broke down. Because it was irreparable, she had to revert to using a toll-taking manual wheelchair that was impacting her body.

Kelly decided that Nellie certainly needed new wheels—an electric wheelchair.

Kelly Beams When Funds Raised Reached Halfway!

A month ago, Kelly set up a crowdfund for Nellie, to which friends, loved ones, and kind community members responded with open arms to what is now the tune of nearly R23,000!

Thanks to them, Nellie is just over R3,000 away from a new electric wheelchair.

“Giving her an electric wheelchair will make her life a lot easier. One of the key features of this new electric wheelchair is that it can be folded up to fit into a car whereas her old one could not. This places substantial limitation on her ability to leave the house as she is reliant on specialised public transport which is more unreliable than reliable.

“Any money raised over the target will go towards some basic accessories for Nellie e.g. wheelchair bag, tray and new cushion. Please help us help Nellie. She gives us all so much joy in the office, this would be life changing for her,” shares Kelly.
