South African hero lungs organ donation

In need of new lungs, Peter Moore 54, has been pushing his body to the limit to raise awareness and now he could finally be getting his second chance too!

We breathed a sigh of relief when Peter Moore, a dedicated organ donation advocate, sent us the happy news that he was finally placed on the transplant list.

The former navy marine now uses his skills to raise awareness for organ donation in South Africa. He has Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) which requires him to have a double lung transplant.

Peter suffered burns to his lungs when he rescued children from a creche after a chlorine gas leak. He now only has between 18% and 24% lung capacity. Despite his struggles, he is determined to make a difference. He completed a 7km swim through freezing water to raise awareness for organ donation.

He recently received some very happy news about his own struggles. He has finally been placed on the waiting list for a double lung transplant. Even with this happy news, Peter plans to spend the rest of his life raising awareness for organ donation. He hopes his story will inspire more people to become organ donors.

“My mission to create awareness for organ donation and young people that are fighting respiratory disease will never end.”

“I have been listed for a double lung transplant, so now I am waiting for the call that will change my life, give me a new life where I can breathe again. Incredibly exciting and at the same time scary.”

While Peter waits for that life-changing phone call, he has many more endurance events planned to help raise awareness. He even has his kids joining him on his next one.

Now he is working to raise the funds needed for his lung transplant. You can follow all of his progress and adventures on his “Just Breathe Marine” Facebook page.

  1. Hey Peter

Hang in there my brother. I see we are about the same age, I had a heart transplant nearly 7 months ago and had been on the waiting list for 3 and a half years. I’d had heart failure since 2008 and end stage since 2011. I’m really writing to you to ask you to hang in there and don’t give up,the absolute joy of being able to breathe again is difficult to describe and explain to someone who hasn’t had major organ failure. By remaining so active you are already an inspiration to many others. May God bless you and your family always. Your friend. Anthony Breakey

  2. Sorry I forgot to add my thanks to you for being an ambassador for the Organ Donor Foundation. I too am a volunteer for the ODF and hope to create a lot more awareness in the Southern Cape when I return home to George at the end of the year. I’m also hoping to run the 2 Oceans Half Marathon next year, in order to create more awareness in the Cape. Thinking of you and praying toy get your transplant soon.
