What started as an HR course assignment has unfolded into a passion project for NMU students Kwakho, Hlanganisa, Asive and Gcobisa. Together, they have taken a portion of their bursary funding to provide food and water to more than 20 people in need in the community of Summerstrand.
Summerstrand, South Africa (13 June 2025) – Times are tough for so many South Africans, especially for those who don’t know where their next meal will come from. Yet, there are still selfless and empathetic individuals among us who, while also feeling the pinch, still find ways to support those in greater need.
Four Nelson Mandela University (NMU) students who have demonstrated this genuine commitment to uplifting the destitute are Kwakho Vambe, Hlanganisa Xakisa, Asive Myataza and Gcobisa Pendu.
In a world where personal gain often takes precedence, they have instead dug into their own pockets, taking a portion of their bursary funding to provide food and water to more than 20 needy people every day.
The Summerstrand-based group started the project #FeedingTheBay as part of their Human Resources Management course. But after the rewarding experience and realising the impact their initiative had on the lives of others, they continued with it long after receiving their marks.
Their decision goes beyond academic achievement, demonstrating a deep understanding of social responsibility and compassion outside their own financial hardships as funded students.
Through #FeedingTheBay, they cook meals which include vegetables, protein, and carbohydrates and also provide a bottle of safe drinking water.
While juggling their books and keeping up with fast-paced varsity life, these young ladies are actively bringing so much relief and goodness to the lives of those often left in the cold.
Kwakho, Hlanganisa, Asive and Gcobisa, we’re inspired by what you’ve started and hope it will inspire others to contribute to a more compassionate society.
