Zeake Swart was a courageous young lady who bravely battled Leukemia, now in her memory, Paarl Girls High and others are raising funds to honour her fight.
Zeake Swart was diagnosed with Leukemia about two years ago when she was in grade 5. Her mother created a Facebook page to keep people up to date on her health care. At the end of August, Zeake sadly lost her battle.
As a way to keep her memory alive, her Facebook page has been kept active and funds have been raised for the newly created “pay-it-forward” fund as part of the Zeake Swart Foundation.
Susan, Zeake’s mother has played a vital role in ensuring that everything done in Zeake’s memory, is done in her name for charity. When the family hosted a celebration of her life, Susan asked that no-one wear black to the service and anyone wanting to send flowers, rather make a donation in Zeake’s name to the fund for the purchase of survival kits for moms at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital.
Paarl Girls High decided to raise funds in Zeake’s name and raised a whopping R6770.00. They shared a very cool picture with all the money spelling out her name.
The survival kits are made up of helpful things for moms to use while they stay with their children in the hospital wards.
- 2 plastic plates
- 2 plastic cereal Bowls
- 2 plastic mugs
- 2 plastic knives, forks and spoons
- 4 plastic containers for coffee, tea, sugar, milk powder
- cup a soup x2
- two-minute noodles x4
- corn flakes (or any other cereal)
- canned sausage x1
- sardines
- any canned protein
- biscuits x2
- OMO
- washing cloth
- soap & soap dish
- toothpaste
- toothbrush x2
Susan knows first hand the struggle of being in the hospital to watch over a child. There is no time to walk away for a meal. These items are all useful with just the use of a kettle.
On the 1st of October, Susan delivered the first 8 survival boxes to moms of newly diagnosed children in the Oncology ward. And funds raised will go towards creating more of these kits.
That is why the big donation from Paarl Girls High has been so wonderful. You can follow the Zeake Swart Foundations activities on Facebook for info on how to get involved.
