Joshua Harper and Ryan Nortje attended the dance together and it’s warming the hearts of many people. This change is a massive step in the right direction.

Pretoria Boys High recently hosted their matric dance and this year they allowed same-sex couples to attend the dance together. The story was shared by Rian van Heerden on the Jacarana FM’s Scenic Drive. He received the story and photo after asking people to send in their Matric Dance stories and photos.

One of the young men’s mothers decided to send in the images and share the news that Pretoria Boys High finally allowed same-sex couples to attend the dance with their partners.

“These two attended the matric dance at Pretoria High School for Boys as a same-sex couple,”

“According to one of the boys’ moms, this was the first time this was allowed in the history of the school.”

The radio station shared the image on their Facebook page and it was flooded with love and support.

“This is how we change the world…one act of bravery and acceptance at a time. Well done boys!” – Antoinette Nicolaou

“Well done boys for taking a stand. Well done Boys High for setting an example….and then, not forgetting…well done the 300 other boys who embraced their classmates without a sidewards glance.” – Maynette Heyns

“The pride…..beautiful! Well done boys you have carved a path for others to come. I am so proud of you! May your lives be prosperous! Go on to tertiary and become productive members of society and wave the rainbow flag high!” – Charity Outlwile Nkadimang-Maine

Sara Elizabeth Harper, the mother to Joshua, was blown away by the support her son had received and thanked everyone. In return people complimented her on being such an amazing person, she however disagreed and said it was all credit to the young men.

“I am his mom and you cannot believe how proud I am. He is an incredible person inside and out”.

“I am not the amazing person Joshua Harper and Ryan Nortje are the amazing people. Life is hard already they didn’t choose this path to make it even harder. I don’t believe God would punish beautiful people being born gay.”

This is such great news especially for a country as diverse as South Africa. We hope the young men had an absolute blast at their dance. They sure did look dapper in their blue suits!
