It has been three years since Project Flamingo appeared on our radar, today the charity changes even more lives than ever before.
Cape Town, South Africa (17 January 2020) – We first discussed Project Flamingo in 2017 and the story went viral. People loved the good work that Dr Liana Roodt was doing for women in need. To date, the article still trends.
It recently popped up again and started trending so we decided to do an update seeing as nearly three years have passed since we shared the original article.
Dr Liana Roodt makes a huge difference for women that are battling breast cancer in the public health sector. She started her programme ‘Project Flamingo’ at Groote Schuur Hospital, and it later grew in popularity and has also started at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town.
The selfless doctor was distressed by the heartbreaking, stretched out and often chaotic journey that breast cancer patients faced in the public health sector. These women were subjected to extremely long waiting periods for surgeries, sometimes waiting up to 12 weeks.
Dr Liana decided to perform “catch-up” surgeries to help alleviate some of the waiting periods.
Funds raised for Project Flamingo go towards offering surgeries, paying for theatre time and nursing staff. The surgeries are a great help to the public health sector’s backlog. Another side of the project is ‘Pamper Packs’; these are filled with items for the newly diagnosed woman.
Today, the surgeries take place across South Africa. Surgeons have joined to help women in every province. People often ask the charity how they can get involved and the response is easy, either help them raise funds or help them with the pamper packs.
“We have 2 main arms to our work, the catch-up theatre lists and the pamper packs given to newly diagnosed patients
Both the packs and the lists can be donated to via donations into our account, the details are on www.projectflamingo.co.za
Alternatively, if you want to help by donating products for the packs or fully packed packs, send us an email on info@projectflamingo.co.za for more information on what is needed for the packs or to get involved in packing”
You can now add the Project Flamingo as a beneficiary on your MySchool card too which is an easy and effortless way to give back to charity. Follow their Facebook page for updates on the surgeries and pamper pack handouts.
