Determined Vet Jean Paul

When DRC vet, Jean Paul, came to South Africa, he faced a future where he couldn’t do the job he’s qualified to do, despite wanting to help our animals. But, thanks to so many South Africans, Jean Paul is on his way to serving animals once again!

South Africa (03 December 2024) — Around two weeks ago, a vet named Musenge Jean Paul Kabongo had no idea how he would be able to help animals with his skillset again.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, Jean Paul, as the vet is more commonly known, had served animals proudly for ten years. But after he was pushed to leave the DRC due to conflict tearing his country apart, he faced a new reality—life as a qualified vet without the accreditation to practice in South Africa. He had peace at last but not the freedom to do his job.

Jean Paul had found a job at a local SPCA and even got recognition by the South Africa Qualification Authority. But, recognition from the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) was what was necessary to enable him to practice his skillset here. And this requires a very expensive test at the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Veterinary Science in Onderstepoort. This test would be taken in October, 2025.

With his family to look after, Jean Paul knew there would be no way to save his way to pay for the test. So, he shared his story and asked his new country for help. Then we shared his story. Then South Africans shared his story.

Soon, Jean Paul’s dream was on many people’s radars.

In the weeks since we first wrote of Jean Paul, his crowdfunding campaign has gone from R0 to meeting its initial target. Today, it has even surpassed that goal; raising R48,420 in the process!

His hopes to work again are no longer a matter of wishful thinking. And he couldn’t be more grateful for his adopted country’s most generous welcome.

“I’d love to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has contributed to this journey. Your generosity and encouragement mean the world to me,” he said.

“I’m proud to share that I’ve been working hard and making progress in my studies. This fundraiser has not only helped me financially but also boosted my motivation to succeed.

“I’m eager to continue learning and growing, and I’m excited to share my progress and future achievements with you all. Thank you for being an integral part of my journey!”
