Captain Mariaan Nel’s passion for animal welfare shines through in her work, ensuring that the four-legged officers are always in top condition to serve and protect.

Free State, South Africa (20 August 2024) – The South African Police Service (SAPS) is shining the spotlight on the amazing work done by Captain Mariaan Nel, a qualified veterinary nurse attached to the SAPS Veterinary Services in Bloemfontein, Free State.

The unsung heroine of law enforcement joined the SAPS 13 years ago as a veterinary nurse captain. She holds a National Diploma in Veterinary Nursing from the University of Pretoria and an Accounting degree.

Nel is one of only five female veterinary nurses in the SAPS and if that isn’t impressive enough, she is spearheading a pilot project as the sole veterinary nurse in the Free State. Nationwide, there are just eight veterinary nurses in the entire service.

The Veterinary Services is a specialised unit which resorts within the component of Visible Policing and Operations.

Caring for police animals demands an extraordinary level of compassion and empathy. These animals are often subjected to stressful and physically demanding situations, requiring their handlers to provide not only medical care but also emotional support.

Moreover, a deep-rooted love for police animals is essential to understanding their needs and providing the care they deserve, something that has proved to be a calling for Nel.

She finds satisfaction in making sure that SAPS’ four-legged crime-fighting heroes are always in the best health and condition to serve and protect the community.

“I am passionate about the well-being of animals, in particular SAPS animals. I encourage girls and young women to pursue a career in the police, as it is rewarding to know your services make a valuable contribution towards a safer country for all,” said Nel.
