In a handful of days, 22nd Sea Scout Troop Alumni raised a small fortune to not only support the current troop but also to honour a late scoutmaster legend!

Kosmos, South Africa (03 February 2025) — Sea Scout troop alumni have come together not only to support the current 22nd Sea Scout Troop but also to honour a legendary scoutmaster, the late Detlev Friemelt.

The effort comes as a heartwarming gesture from those positively impacted by the Sea Scouts and speaks to the fact that even if you benefited positively from a programme like this yonks ago, the place it has in your heart is permanent.

As Laurence Kruger shares:

“I spent 15 formative years with 22nds Sea Scout Troop, and we could probably all attest to the life-changing impact 22SS has had on young people over the decades. Through those years, we not only learned essential boating and scouting skills but also developed critical life skills. The experiences we gained—both on the water and in the wilderness— has shaped us to be more confident, resourceful, and capable people.”

Many former Sea Scouts have gone on to lead big and adventurous lives, like Marc Germiquet, who valiantly rowed across the Atlantic.

But, positive experiences need positive role models and leaders. And for many Sea Scouts, these attributes had a name—Detlev Friemelt.

According to the 22nd Pretoria Sea Scouts in citing “The History of 22nd Pretoria Sea Scouts ” by Anthony Wilcocks:

“[Detlev] became one of the most dynamic Scout Masters in the history of the Troop. His progress through 22nd left a wake that will be remembered many years well into the future.”

The Scout Master passed away in 2023.

The late Detlev Friemelt.

After Laurence attended a recent troop birthday and Detlev’s memorial, he was “incredibly pleased” to observe that the 22SS is still going strong and providing important opportunities to young people.

Wanting to support the scouts’ future, especially in honour of Detlev, Laurence organised a crowdfunding campaign to renew assets vital to the troop’s activities and continue its positive impact.

“Detlev was one of the most influential characters at 22SS over the last while with his unwavering commitment and inspiring leadership. Given the impact that he had on our lives, we would like to raise these funds in his name,” Laurence explains.

In the days to follow, the campaign was met with an abundance of support, all of which is a testament to the impact the Sea Scouts have had on people’s lives!

So far, the crowdfunding has raised a small fortune that’s sitting at over R30,000.

While the big target sits at R100,000, the momentum it’s been met with could mean that the scouts will have a whole lot of help for months to come, very soon.

Former scouts and supporters can join the effort and learn more about the fundraiser here.
