A Portuguese South African, the oh-so-talented FILIPA, has sung her way to Festival da Canção. If she wins the finals, her next stop will be competing in none other than Eurovision!

Portugal (05 February 2024) — South African talent is at it again on the global stage after shooting star on the rise, singer and songwriter FILIPA, wowed Portugal with her gift of song. Not only has FILIPA made it to the equivalent of a ‘semi-finals’ for Festival da Canção, but she’s also a pitstop closer on the road to Eurovision.

A music lover from childhood, FILIPA recorded the first song she wrote at 12 years old. A handful of years later, her hard work and talent saw her win a Ryan Seacrest cover song competition for her breathtaking take on ‘Story of My Life’ by One Direction when she was 18—an obvious green flag that her passion was headed in the right direction.

This win put her talents on local and international radars and led her to release her debut single, ‘Chills’, on Secreast’s platform. Later on, her song ‘Little White Lie’ would land on 5FM’s Top 5 and Jacaranda FM’s Top 20, fuelling a future filled with more opportunities to spread her wings in the world of music.

Life moved quickly as the young singer began working with producers and songwriters overseas, including Pam Sheyne who worked on Christina Aguilera’s ‘Genie in a Bottle. Positioned as a ‘transparent pop artist’, FILIPA’s draw card isn’t just her ability as an artist, but raw storytelling.

Festival da Canção (a competition her mom is said to have always loved) then, is another big opportunity for her sound to reach more ears and resonate with more hearts, and she’s shown the competition flames. She will be performing again on 2 March where her destiny in the finals will be determined. Should the stars align and voters support her, she has the chance to compete in Eurovision by default.

While we’re sure many locals would love to support FILIPA, only South Africans living in Portugal can vote. So if that sounds like you, tune into the competition and cast your support!
