The quick efforts of firefighters in Richard’s Bay came to the rescue recently, protecting numerous people and buildings after roof repairs reportedly went wrong at uMhlathuze Civic Centre.

Richard’s Bay, South Africa (29 March, 2023) — Things got heated at the City of uMhlathuze yesterday after a roof repair in the City’s offices reportedly went wrong. However, thanks to the quick efforts of local firefighters, not a single life was lost!

According to Municipal Manager Nkosenye Zulu, the fire is believed to have begun because of a welding job gone wrong. The municipality offices have been dealing with water-related repairs for the past few months, and recently, further repairs were added to the bill thanks to roof leaks.

This called for some welding work—suspected to be the fire’s sparking cause according to multiple reports.

Employees were quickly evacuated and the fire department was soon at the scene with superhero speed. Thanks to the City of uMhlathuze’s brave efforts, the building also endured less damage than anticipated.

Commending the bravery of the firefighters, Councilor Henning de Wet made sure their sacrifice did not go unnoticed:

“Your quick response, bravery, and tireless efforts helped to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further, ultimately saving lives and protecting property. The work you do every day, risking your own safety to protect our community, is nothing short of amazing and inspiring.

Your dedication to duty and your commitment to the well-being of our community is a testament to your professionalism and selflessness. It is heartwarming to know that we have such brave and skilled individuals in our community who are always ready to respond to emergencies and protect us in times of need.

On behalf of the entire community, I want to express our deepest gratitude and thanks for your service. Your sacrifices do not go unnoticed, and we are all deeply grateful for everything you do.

Thank you once again for your unwavering dedication and service to our community.”
