Illness, disability and unsafe living conditions. Surprise Khoza endured it all with an enduring human spirit. This week, his life took a beautiful turn; a touching reminder that moments of genuine compassion from those willing to listen to our stories can truly transform for the better.
South Africa (13 July 2025) – Surprise Khoza’s life has been forever changed in the most heartwarming of ways.
Previously living alone in an unsafe shack and depending on a social grant for survival, the senior’s journey has taken a beautiful turn after being presented with a new, fully furnished home.
The gift in kind comes from the CMF and its partners following founder Collen’s first encounter with Khoza, which left him moved by the quiet strength of a man who has overcome so much.
At 50 years old, Khoza lives with a disability and has faced significant health challenges, including tuberculosis, which has left him with just one functioning lung.
Despite these obstacles, he is highly educated, possessing a Master’s Degree in Development Planning and an Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts.
“Yet, education and resilience couldn’t protect him from life’s harsh realities.
“That day, I made him a promise: we would transform his life story,” says Mashawana.
This week, with immense gratitude and joy, the CMF provided Khoza with a fully furnished two-bedroom home – a place where he can breathe easier, live with dignity, and rebuild his life filled with hope.
“This is what it means to restore dignity. This is what humanity looks like,” Mashawana said.
Some moments remind us of the vital importance of compassion and commitment, and this special house handover is one of them. We hope Khoza will rest a little easier with the peace of mind, knowing he has a dignified, safer and warmer place to call home.
