Johannesburg, South Africa (16 September 2024) — South African artivist Natania Botha recently teamed up with talented 20-year-old creative Kevash Naidoo to create an ode to the Springboks and all they encompass in art form. The result? A breathtaking mosaic sculpture that, just like the Boks, embodies unity—unity that’s made possible by the sum of many differences coming together for one proud purpose.
The Springboks Sculpture comes as a celebration of the Springboks victory in reclaiming the Freedom Cup—a feat South Africans across the world are still relishing in. But, it’s also a striking visual translation of other concepts South Africa sees itself reflected in through our national team.
“The sculpture represents the fusion of art, sport and social inclusion,” says Natania who described the experience of working with Kevash, who has Down syndrome, as a “meaningful collaboration of art and resilience” and a privilege.
“It stands as a visual homage to teamwork, unity, and overcoming challenges—values that Kevash and I embraced wholeheartedly throughout the creative process.”
And, just like South Africa’s love for our team, the sculpture is sustainable.
“What makes this sculpture truly special is that it is a sustainable creation, crafted from a recycled mannequin and sustainably sourced materials, symbolising not only the triumph of the Springboks but also the importance of environmental responsibility,” Natania, who is no stranger to bringing mannequins to life in the most thought-provoking ways, adds.
“Our sustainable approach further highlights the importance of rethinking how we create and consume in a world increasingly focused on preserving resources.”
Natania and Kevash hope their Sustainable Springbok Sculpture will get the chance to travel far and wide across South Africa and inspire more locals to unite as team members of our country.
Currently, you can catch it on exhibition at the Gordon Institute of Business Science.
