Sindiswa’s story of voluntarily introducing an African language to students eager to learn is a beautiful example of how one dedicated teacher can transform a school and greatly enrich the lives of its students.

Johannesburg, South Africa (19 February 2025) – After realising a gap in her school’s curriculum shortly after joining Sandton View Combined School in Johannesburg, passionate teacher, Sindiswa didn’t think twice about addressing it and making her mark!

Initially appointed to teach English to Grade 10 learners in 2019, Sindiswa realised that the school did not offer IsiZulu as a First Additional Language (FAL). Recognising the importance of this subject, she volunteered to teach IsiZulu when the principal sought someone to take it on.

In 2020, she began teaching IsiZulu to Grade 8 learners. Demonstrating unwavering commitment, Sindiswa moved up with her learners each year, culminating in a historic milestone in 2024, where 64 learners became the first class in the school’s history to write IsiZulu FAL as part of their matric exams.

Remarkably, every learner passed with results that reflect Sindiswa’s 20-year dedication and exceptional teaching:

  • 50-59%: 2 learners
  • 60-69%: 18 learners
  • 70-79%: 31 learners
  • 80-99%: 13 learners

This achievement also marked another first for the school— with IsiZulu FAL becoming the first subject to secure a significant amount of distinctions in matric final exams!

But it’s not just about the numbers. It’s about the heart Sindiswa poured into her work, the belief she instilled in her students, and the pride she fostered in their cultural identity.

Her extraordinary efforts and the success of her students are a testament to her passion for education and her commitment to making a difference.

With such passionate changemakers in education, it’s safe to say that our youngsters are in safe hands and are well on the path to achieving greatness!
