The first Mrs Soweto ever has been crowned as Mel Tlhapi—a woman of many superpowers.

Soweto, South Africa (22 August, 2023) — The first ever Mrst Soweto has been crowned with Mel Tlhapi from Mofolo Central standing in one of Soweto’s most honourable spotlights.

“Dear God, I never saw this coming”, Tlhapi shared of her crowning moment which took place earlier this month at a glittering black-tie gala event in Soweto Theatre.

The crowning ceremony also marks the end of a five-month empowerment programme for the other finalists, so everyone walked away from the journey with more than what they started.

As for Mrs Soweto, Mel Tlhapi is a woman of many superpowers, many of which have earned her other titles, including Best Tour Operator in Soweto, and one of the Top 100 Under 40 Travel Entrepreneurs in Africa. Beyond her entrepreneurial pursuits, Mel isn’t afraid to let down her armour and express gorgeous transparency in her journey of self and mental health.

After winning the crown (a bespoke traditional African hat symbolising ‘Mmabatho’; a people’s person), the first Mrs South Africa welcomes a wealth of opportunities to better her community.

One opportunity lies in her award: a 3-year university bursary including accommodation, stipend and a computer for a beneficiary of Mrs SA’s choice.
