As she prepares for retirement, Elizabeth De Vos leaves a void at the University of Cape Town’s Centre for Materials Engineering where her commitment and caring spirit have greatly impacted her colleagues and students.
Cape Town, South Africa (07 November 2024) – Elizabeth Florence De Vos, a beloved cleaner at the University of Cape Town’s Centre for Materials Engineering, is set to retire after 23 years of dedicated service.
The university honoured and celebrated Elizabeth and other retiring staff members at a special farewell luncheon.
Known for her caring and generous spirit, Elizabeth has been a beloved figure, sharing her work and friendship with those around her.
Sharing about her work, which she does with pride, Elizabeth’s daily routine entails cleaning the kitchen, toilets, bathrooms and computer labs at the engineering centre.
“I like seeing myself busy and I am happy when I am working. I enjoy it because that is how I show myself love. Students and staff adore me in this building. I enjoy working here,” she says.
Although she never married, Elizabeth opened up about how her job gave her the financial security to adopt and support a child as well as help others wherever she could.
As she prepares for retirement, Elizabeth hopes to assist and support the residents of a retirement home in Gugulethu.
While she is sad to leave her home away from home after so many years, Elizabeth is excited for what lies ahead and encourages students to continue being respectful to others, do the right thing and strive for success.
