Inspired by a fond childhood memory, 10-year-old Vashin turned his passion for animals into an extraordinary act of compassion to help the Springs SPCA.
Springs, South Africa (11 September 2025) – Most of us have fond childhood memories that easily warm our hearts upon recollection and remain with us well into our mature years.
Inspired by his cherished childhood memory of visiting the Springs SPCA with his grandfather, 10-year-old Vashin, a proud Cub Scout, chose his Leaping Wolf Badge personal challenge to be something truly extraordinary: to raise funds for the animals in the shelter’s care.
The Leaping Wolf Badge is the highest achievable award for a Cub Scout in the Scouts South Africa programme, earned in a Cub’s final year before moving to Scout Troop. It often requires scouts to plan and execute their chosen projects on their own to help build independence and prepare for the next level.
Vashin set out to raise R10,000 for Springs SPCA, and not only did he successfully rally the community to support his cause, but he doubled his fundraising goal! Vashin raised an amazing R20,000 for animals in need, truly living up to the Scouts’ honour to help others.
“Vashin, your compassion, your determination, and your belief that we must help if we are able, have not only touched our hearts but will change the lives of countless animals who arrive at our doors in need of shelter, food, medical care, and love,” the SPCA said.
The SPCA team further thanked the young boy whose heart is far bigger than his age.
“On behalf of every wagging tail, every rescued paw, and every second chance you have given, we say THANK YOU. You have shown us all that no one is ever too young to make a difference. You are, without a doubt, a true hero for animals.”
What a special boy. Well done to you, Vashin. You did a good thing!
