Moved to help a struggling gogo, community members and volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help build her new and safer place to call home.
Free State, South Africa (12 September 2024) – A home is more than just a basic need in the form of a structure with a roof; it’s a sanctuary where we find comfort and belonging.
Living alone in a dilapidated three-room corrugated iron house with a leaky roof, Dlamini, a resident of the Free State, had been struggling to find a safe and comfortable place to call her own before the intervention of a group of Good Samaritans.
According to Habitat for Humanity South Africa, the elderly woman’s home offered little to protect her from the elements, often causing challenges to her health.
Despite her circumstances, her strength is inspiring. She collects bottles for recycling, earning a modest income to sustain herself.
In a heartwarming and humanitarian response to her plight, volunteers from the Industrial Development Corporation and the local community have come together to assist Dlamini in her transition to a decent and safe home, displaying unity and compassion.
“I am very happy that with the new house, I will now be a respected member of society,” Dlamini shared with a smile.
For Dlamini, a new home represents a fresh start and a newfound sense of dignity and it won’t be long until she realises this long awaited dream.
Through the #NelsonMandelaBuild project, Habitat for Humanity South Africa and its associates are building more than homes but also building communities and changing lives.
