Peak rush hour. Sandton traffic. A car battery that decided to die at the worst possible time. This wasn’t the morning Kagiso Khoabane had planned, but three unsuspecting roadside heroes turned the story from headache to heartfelt!

Johannesburg, South Africa (11 April, 2023) — In the bustle of Sandton traffic, the silent plea of many South Africans is the same. ‘Please don’t let my car act up.’ However, sometimes our cars have selective hearing, and before we know it, our tyres have given in or our batteries take a time out. In these moments, we either need (or become) roadside heroes.

Kagiso Khoabane’s day wasn’t off to a great start. On a Thursday a few weeks back, she found her car misbehaving in Sandton traffic swell, only to find out her battery had switched off.

Before she had time to sweat over the situation, three roadside heroes emerged, swooping from their responsibilities to make sure she was back on the move.

In other parts of the world, it might be common for police officers to help out with a car conundrum. In South Africa, we tend to turn more to each other than to the authorities for help in these cases.

However, the three cops who rallied together for Kagiso and her stubborn car proved this conception wrong. Jumping into action, one officer steered, one helped Kagiso push and the other directed traffic so the car could get started safely.

In speaking to GoodThingsGuy, Kagiso shared:

“My car decided to simply die on Katherine Rd. Just as I was about to come out the car, 3 Metro Police Officers stopped their car and asked if they could assist. I asked if they would please assist and the female officer directed traffic while the two male officers assisted with my car.

The reason I tell you this story is because they didn’t need to stop and assist, but they did. They even assisted in jump starting my car and literally wanted nothing in return!

“I couldn’t believe that South African officers would assist me…All three officers got out of the car and worked together to assist me. I thought about how grateful I am to have such helpful officers assisting me on a Thursday.”
