The Potchefstroom Gimnasium school community recently celebrated a heartwarming tradition where older students washed the feet of the Grade 8s, mirroring Jesus’ act of humility and service.
Potchefstroom, South Africa (22 January 2025) – The learners of Potchefstroom Gimnasium showcased the most touching display of humility and service as it welcomed its newest schoolmates, the Grade 8s.
Instead of the typical awkward initiation rituals, this high school embraced a unique tradition where older learners humbly washed the feet of the younger ones.
Armed with buckets of water, soap, and clean towels, they performed this act of service to conclude the “Becoming-a-Gimmie” orientation weekend and officially welcome the Grade 8s into the school community.
Just as the Bible describes how Jesus washed his disciples’ feet out of honour and humility, so too did the older students follow that example to show the Grade 8s that they care about them and want to serve them. This was also a message to the Grade 8s to always remain humble, be of service, lift each other, and together reach greater heights!
An emotional video shared on Facebook by the school shows the learners humbly demonstrating the feet-washing ceremony and fervently praying over the Grade 8s, a moment that has deeply moved us and many other South Africans online, responding with heartfelt messages on the post.
To see children showcase so much care and humility towards one another in a world that is largely fixated on self-interest, affirms that there is still so much goodness, kindness and companionship out there. Props to you Potchefstroom Gimnasium!
