After helping deliver a baby during a night shift at a Cape Town petrol station, Chevaan Abrahams became an overnight hero. Now South Africans are helping him pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a paramedic.
Western Cape, South Africa (09 June 2026) – A single act of courage at a petrol station has turned into something far bigger than anyone could have imagined.
By now, many South Africans have heard the remarkable story of 21-year-old Chevaan Abrahams, the petrol attendant from Kuils River who helped deliver a baby while working a night shift at a Shell garage. A pregnant woman arrived at the station in active labour. There was no time to get her to the hospital, and before paramedics could arrive, Chevaan stepped forward and helped bring a healthy baby into the world.
The story first captured hearts across the country when the YOU Magazine reported on it. The incredible moment found an even bigger audience after Austin Macaskill, the man behind “Cool Story Bru“, shared both the original story and an update about the young hero whose quick thinking helped save the day. As South Africans learned more about Chevaan, they discovered something that made the story even more meaningful: helping people in emergencies isn’t just something he did in the moment. It’s something he has dreamed of doing his entire life.

That revelation struck a chord with South Africans. It wasn’t just that he had helped deliver a baby; it was that he had done so while carrying a lifelong dream of helping people in emergencies.
Gareth Williamson launched a crowdfunding campaign on behalf of Austin to help turn that dream into reality. The goal was simple: raise R50,000 to assist Chevaan on his journey towards studying and qualifying as a paramedic. At the time of publishing, the campaign had already surpassed its target, raising more than R62,000, with donations continuing to roll in alongside hundreds of messages of encouragement from people inspired by the young man’s actions.

It’s not every day that a petrol attendant (or off-duty nurses) help deliver a baby. But it is every day that ordinary South Africans step up when someone needs help.
Now, thanks to the generosity of strangers who were inspired by his actions, his future looks a little different for Chevaan too. The support he’s received is more than a reward for a good deed. It’s a vote of confidence in a young man whose instinct is to help others. And judging by the thousands of South Africans who have already backed him, there are plenty of people who believe this remarkable story is only the beginning.
