South African Car Washes Are a Vibe Like No Other

A US man shares why he misses South Africa’s car wash culture, a blend of clean cars, food, and weekend vibes.

South Africa (20 August 2025) – Never thought one would say this, but South Africans, we might just be taking our car washes for granted. When it comes to everyday things South Africans take for granted, the humble car wash deserves a spot on the list. A recent video from a US-based man has sparked laughs online as he shared what he misses most about living in South Africa. And car wash culture is top of his list.

In America, he explained, a standard wash costs about $13 (over R200) and often involves a drive-through machine that leaves you to finish the job yourself. Yes, you read that right! Drivers have to dry the car on their own. And if you are hungry? At best, there is a vending machine with some chips nearby.

Compare that to South Africa, where a car wash is almost an experience in itself. For a fraction of the price, your car gets the full treatment, inside and out, while you sit back, relax, and maybe even tuck into a plate of shisanyama. While maybe some car washes do not offer that, at least you don’t have to dry it yourself, right?

And it’s not just about the wash, it’s a social ritual. Many South Africans prefer heading to the car wash on weekends, especially Saturdays or lazy Sunday afternoons. It’s a chance to hang out, grab a drink or some meat off the braai, and just enjoy the atmosphere while your car gets spotless.

For many, it’s the “little things” that make South African car washes special, its the detail and the care. And while locals might not give it much thought, this video is a reminder of how unique the culture really is. After all, where else can you leave with a clean car and a full stomach?
