Do you remember Sello? The man who carried his injured dog 15 kilometres to save her life? He now works as one of the animal heroes at the SPCA!

Free State, South Africa (09 July 2026) – We’ve got the happiest update to one of our favourite stories!

Do you remember Sello, the man who walked nearly 15 kilometres carrying his injured dog, Option, to safety? Life has come full circle… because Sello now works at the very SPCA that helped save her, and Option gets to go to work with him every day.

In October last year, Option was hit by a car. Sello had no transport and barely a rand to his name, so he called every shelter he could find until Virginia SPCA said yes. Then he picked her up and walked 15 kilometres on foot to get her the help she needed.

That story went viral, and it reached thousands of people. It also reached one incredibly kind lady in particular, and she decided she wanted to do more than just donate. She offered to sponsor Sello’s employment. Today, Sello is officially part of the family at the Virginia SPCA!

“Many will remember Sello Mabothe, who walked nearly 15 kilometres, carrying his beloved dog, Option, after she was struck by a vehicle. He refused to give up on her. Step by step, he carried her to Virginia SPCA, determined to save her life. That story reached a remarkable, kind-hearted lady whose generosity changed another life. Without hesitation, she offered to sponsor Sello’s employment at Virginia SPCA.” the organisation shares.

The same man who walked 15 km carrying his own injured dog is now the one helping carry other people’s animals to safety. The team at the SPCA has warmly welcomed Sello under their wings. He has proved that his heart of gold goes out for all animals.

“What an incredible journey it has been. Every day we witness the gift he brings to our work. There is something truly special about him. His gentle spirit and sincere kindness instantly reassure frightened, vulnerable, elderly and injured dogs. They seem to know they are safe in his hands,” the SPCA shared.

The best thing? Option goes to work with Sello!

“Option spends her days lazing around teasing the staff and watching her dad Sello work.” the SPCA shares.
