One simple question at a doctor’s office in the US led to a thoughtful surprise that made a South African feel right at home.
United States (28 July 2026) – For one South African living in the United States, an everyday question at work has become the start of countless conversations and one unexpected act of kindness.
Working at the front desk of a medical practice, they’re often greeted with the same question from patients:
“Where is your accent from?”
Over the past three months, they’ve met people who have travelled to South Africa, others who have fond memories of the country, and even an American whose son was born in Pietermaritzburg in the 1980s. There have also been a few amusing stories along the way, including tourists who accidentally found themselves in Mitchells Plain instead of enjoying the Table Mountain views they had expected.
And despite the regular guesses, one thing still needs clearing up almost daily: the accent is definitely not British.
After hearing several patients ask where the accent was from, one man joked that there should simply be a sign on the desk saying, “My accent is from South Africa.”
Everyone laughed, and the conversation moved on. Or so they thought.
Later that day, the patient returned; however, this time carrying a small surprise. He had gone home, designed and 3D-printed a little sign that read exactly what he had suggested earlier.
What may have seemed like a light-hearted gesture to him meant far more to the South African on the receiving end. Moving to a new country often comes with uncertainty.
The thoughtful gift became more than just a funny desk accessory, but a reminder that kindness has a way of making unfamiliar places feel a little more familiar.
For this South African abroad, a simple blue sign now serves as a daily reminder that home is about the people who make you feel welcome where you are.
